Overview

Rhode Island is leading the way for student biotech education and skills development as it provides a home for nationally-recognized SkillsUSA to hold its first-ever high school biotech competition!  

This competition has been developed by RI science educators and is being piloted here in RI to prepare for national adoption. 35-40 students from seven RI high schools and career and tech centers are expected to participate.
 

Industry Involvement

SkillsUSA Rhode IslandURI Providence Biotechnology Center, and Tech Collective are seeking bioscience industry professionals to serve as judges or facilitators during the half-day competition. Responsibilities would be to provide feedback/rating as outlined in a supplied rubric and/or to ensure established rules/procedures are adhered to during the competition.
 

Competition Details

When:  Saturday, March 9, 2013 / 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Where:  URI Feinstein Providence Campus

Students will demonstrate understanding and proficiency in bioscience procedures and techniques  by preparing a gel and buffers, running the gel and staining it for visualization, and then analyzing the gel.  Methods of analysis will depend on the type of kit the students receive; likely they will use a molecular ruler/ DNA marker.

Student winners will be announced at SkillsUSA's annual recognition ceremony in March.
  
 

Participating Schools

Each of the participating Rhode Island high schools and career and tech centers has an established bioscience program engaging students in the processes, methodology, and general understanding of the industry. Each school is permitted to enter up to five students into the competition. Students will compete individually. Participating schools are:

  • Burrillville HS
  • Coventry HS
  • Davies CTHS (Lincoln)
  • Juanita Sanchez HS (Providence)
  • Woonsocket CTC
  • Warwick Veterans Memorial HS
  • Mt. Hope (Bristol/Warren)
